How many times do you complain about a speeding driver?
Barwell Parish Council is seeking local residents to participate in a new Community Speedwatch scheme, launching this August. The council aims to recruit a minimum of 12 volunteers for this nationally-recognised program designed to promote safer streets in our community.
Working in partnership with local police, trained volunteers will use approved detection devices to monitor vehicle speeds in designated areas. This initiative forms part of a broader strategy to improve road safety through community engagement and education.
Speedwatch activity is not about interfering with neighbours' behaviour; it is a proactive solution to improve the safety and quality of life for everyone in their local community.
The program will run from August 2nd to August 15th, 2025, with comprehensive training provided to all volunteers before the launch. Registered keepers of vehicles found exceeding speed limits will initially receive educational letters, with follow-up police visits for repeat offenders.
To qualify as a volunteer, individuals must:
• Be Barwell residents
• Be available during the program dates
• Commit to following all safety protocols
Interested residents are encouraged to contact the Parish Clerk at clerk@barwell-pc.gov.uk for more information or to volunteer.
The Community Speedwatch scheme has proven successful in other areas, demonstrating how local communities can work together effectively with law enforcement to enhance road safety.
